Saints fall in overtime, ending regional domination (with photos)

The St. Ignace Saints girls’ basketball team saw their run of 11 straight regional titles end on Wednesday at the Sault High Gymnasium, as they dropped a overtime decision to undefeated Calumet, 65-55, in a Division 3, Region 17 final.

St. Ignace’s Tabby Shephard hit a turn-around jumper with four seconds remaining, to tie the game and send it to overtime. In overtime, the Copper Kings outscored the Saints, 16-6, to come away with the victory. Marybeth Halonen led Calumet with 18 points, while Elli Dierf had 17. St. Ignace was led in scoring by Emmalee Hart with 19 points, as the Saints end their season at 14-5. Calumet (19-0) advances to a Division 3 quarterfinal on Monday, where they will take on Maple City Glen Lake (19-0) in Houghton Lake.

The Rudyard Bulldogs advanced to their first ever quarterfinal in girls’ basketball, as Mackinaw City had to opt out of their scheduled regional final in Wolverine on Wednesday, because of COVID-19. Rudyard (12-5) will play Carney-Nadeau (21-0) in a Division 4 quarterfinal on Monday night in Negaunee at 7:00 pm. On Thursday night the Rudyard (16-2) will face Alanson (14-7) in a boys’ basketball Division 4, Region 26 final at Pellston at 7:00 pm. The winner of that game will advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal where they will take on winner of tonight’s regional final game between Bessemer (13-7) and Carney-Nadeau (12-8).
