Newberry, Rudyard advance to regional final

In high school football from this past weekend, in a game you heard on Country 105 with Dave Watson, the Newberry Indians traveled to the Chuck Bennin Memorial Field on Friday night and defeated the Pickford Panthers, 32-14, in an 8-Player Football Division 1 Region 1 semifinal. 

Newberry had 412 yards of total offense, as quarterback Connor Rintamaki threw for three touchdowns and had 223 yards passing. Marco Juarez gained 171 yards on the ground and had two touchdowns for the Indians. Matthew Rahilly had eight catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Pickford, who ends their season at 7-3, were led offensively by Josh Sullivan who had 203 yards rushing on 26 carries, adding a pair of touchdowns.

Newberry will host Rudyard on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in a regional final. The Rudyard Bulldogs traveled to Munising on Friday, and knocked off the top-seeded Mustangs, 38-14. It was the run game lifting the Bulldogs to victory, as they had 240 yards on the ground of their 300 yards of offense. EJ Suggitt gained 79 yards on 21 carries, while Austin Warner had 74 yards and Aiden Bickel added 70. Suggitt also threw for a pair of touchdowns.

The winner of Friday’s game between the Indians and the Bulldogs will advance to an 8-Player Division 1 semifinal next week at either Sutton’s Bay or Indian River Inland Lakes.

In 8-Player Football Division 2, Powers North Central topped Pellston, 64-14. They will take on Crystal Falls Forest Park next, who edged out Lake Linden Hubble 6-0. On the other side of the bracket Marion will take on Hillman in a regional final.

In 11-Player Football playoffs from this weekend, in Division 1, Traverse City west falls to Grandville, 45-7. In Division 2, Traverse City Central crushes Saginaw Heritage, 49-7, they will host Bay City Western in their regional final, as Western squeaks by Midland Dow, 25-23. Division 3, Marquette falls to Mount Pleasant 37-6. In Division 4, Cadillac tops Fruitport 42-35 and will host Whitehall next week, as Whitehall ran past Sparta, 40-20. Division 5, Kingley over Kingsford 28-10, they will host Clare as they defeated Gladwin, 32-12. In Division 6, Negaunee over Gladstone, 42-28 they will host Calumet as the Copper Kings took out Menominee, 35-20. Grayling falls to Boyne City 19-18, the Ramblers will be at Standish-Sterling, as they shut out Maple City Glen Lake, 34-0. In Division 7, Charlevoix over Mancelona, 50-8 they will take Ishpeming Westwood, who knocked out East Jordan, 44-6.  Traverse City St. Francis routed Harrison, 64-34, and will face McBain, as they defeated Evart, 42-7. In Division 8 Beal City will host Iron Mountain, Beal City shut out Bark River-Harris 36-0, while Iron Mountain topped Frankford 35-7.
