Early outburst leads Eagles over Beavers

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A four-goal first period proved to be enough as the Soo Eagles went on to defeat the Blind River Beavers 5-2 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.

After defeating the Beavers on home ice Friday, the Eagles got off to a good start in this one as a puck off the side boards found Brendan Boberg and allowed him to go in alone on the left side where he buried a shot past Blind River netminder Ian Blair, three minutes into the matchup.

Going up by a pair at 5:45, Bradyn Walsh collected his initial tally by putting one towards the crease that clipped off a defender and went into the net.

Sault Ste. Marie kept it rolling when Alex Povorozniuk clicked on the power play by taking a cross-ice pass from Anthony Mayes and whipping it upstairs.

Another extra-man effort saw Jayden Rothmeyer connect from the left side as the Eagles continued to soar.

Tightening up defensively in the second stanza, the session went without a goal as the Soo carried their 4-0 lead into the intermission.

In the final session, Blind River eventually solved Soo netminder Jett Loechler with just four minutes remaining in regulation when Ilian Danilov benefitted off a nice rush up ice by Ryder Hill, then took his feed that he took wide and lifted it in.

Notching another at 17:11, Hill made it 4-2 by connecting on a screen shot from along the side boards to make it interesting.

However, the Eagles regrouped and secured the road win thanks to Rothmeyer putting one into an empty net prior to time expiring as he swiped the puck off a defender in deep and converted to close out the result.
