The Sault High Blue Devil hockey team opened up regional play on Tuesday night in Tawas, and skated away with a 5-2 win over the Braves. Sault High (6-5) advances to the regional semifinal on Thursday against Alpena. That game will be played in Tawas, and you can hear the game on 1230 WSOO, with Dave Watson, starting with the pregame show at 4:45 p.m. The other regional semifinal in Tawas sees Cheboygan taking on Gaylord on Thursday. The regional final is set for Tawas on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
In boys’ high school basketball on Tuesday night, the Sault High Blue Devils topped Newberry, 66-34 on Senior Night at the Sault High Gymnasium. Bennett Swanson scored 11 points to lead the Blue Devils. Sault High (4-9) will be at Brimley on Thursday. You can hear that game on 1230 WSOO, with Scott Nason and Ray Bell, right after the Blue Devil hockey game ends. DeTour knocked off Brimley on the road on Tuesday, 66-63. DeTour (5-6) hosts Harbor Light Christian on Friday, while Brimley (4-7) hosts the Sault on Thursday.
One girls’ basketball game on Tuesday night, as the Pickford Panthers knocked off the Rudyard Bulldogs, 54-31. Lizzie Storey had 12 points to lead the Panthers. With the win, Pickford creates a four-way tie atop the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference with Rudyard, Cedarville, and Newberry.
