MSP Brings Teen Defensive Driving Training to the Upper Peninsula

Upper Peninsula, Michigan. The Michigan State Police (MSP) hosted Teen Defensive Driving
Programs in Brimley and Gladstone on August 15 and 16, 2026. The programs gave a total of
63 teens hands on training and practical skills to help them become safer drivers.

33 students in total attended the Brimley sessions on August 15, followed by 30 students in total
at the Gladstone sessions on August 16. Participants included teens from across the Upper
Peninsula, the Lower Peninsula, and even some out-of-state teens took part.

The training included behind the wheel instruction in MSP patrol vehicles. Experienced troopers
taught teens defensive driving and crash avoidance techniques designed to improve their
driving skills and build confidence behind the wheel. The hands-on training also gave teens a
chance to interact with troopers in a positive and fun environment.

The program also included training focused on real world driving safety. MSP troopers talked
with students about the dangers of how alcohol, drugs, and distractions can negatively affect
driving safety.

Local MSP troopers helped lead the programs, with additional troopers traveling from across
Michigan to assist with the training. The program was developed through a project administered
by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, with funding provided by the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The program has received very positive feedback, and MSP is already planning additional dates
and locations across Michigan to give more teens the chance to take part next year.

School for helping to host the training.
