Lumberjacks get by Eagles in OT to close out Day 1 at NOJHL Showcase

SUDBURY, Ont. – A Theo Bourdon-Lemoyne shorthanded goal 4:08 into overtime was the difference as the Hearst Lumberjacks pulled out a 4-3 victory against the Soo Eagles Tuesday night to complete Day 1 play at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase being held at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Hearst opened the scoring nearly three minutes into the proceedings when Luc Warner collected the puck in the Sault Ste. Marie zone, then spun and put it towards the net where Bourdon-Lemoyne snagged it and took it to his right before lifting it over a sprawled Jett Loechler in the Eagles net.

More from the Lumberjacks a couple shifts later saw Owen Kahl win a race to the puck and split the defence before scoring his fifth of the campaign.

Getting one back while skating four aside, Alex Povorozniouk went hard to the net along the goal line, which allowed Harmon Esch to jam in a chance on Hearst goalkeeper Caleb Hennings, who was making his NOJHL debut.

Regaining their multi-marker edge early in the middle frame, the Lumberjacks’ Dylan Westmann parked down low spotted Kadin Bilajbegovic driving in the back door where he promptly buried his chance.

Inching closer while down a man, the Soo’s Darren Mayhew forced a turnover at his own blueline and raced in alone on a breakaway and promptly wired a shot under the glove of Hennings.

Pulling even on a delayed penalty just over five minutes into third, the Eagles’ Anthony Mayes collected his initial NOJHL tally by roofing a backhand off a rush generated by Sam Gold.

Staying level through the remainder of regulation, the clubs headed to extra time.

On a four-on-three power play to begin OT, the Soo could not convert to keep the contest ongoing.

Picking up an extra-man opportunity, the Eagles had another chance to win it, but it was the Jacks who pulled out the win as Bourdon-Lemoyne collected the puck along the side boards in his own end before darting up the right wing with speed prior to pulling up slightly in the Eagles zone and firing the game-winner into the bottom left corner to end it.

Picking up the Player of the Game awards for each club were Bourdon-Lemoyne and Povorozniouk.

The NOJHL Showcase continues Wednesday with six more games on tap in Sudbury and on FLOHockey.tv.
