M-28 head on crash claims life of Newberry resident [story updated]

UPDATE: The MIchigan State Police have issued an update on this accident that claimed the life of 64-year-old Alice Nelson when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck her vehicle head-on.

The suspect, Eric Wayne Edwards, was arrested on 12/29/2022. He was arraigned on 12/29/22 in the 92nd District Court- Newberry on the charge of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death. He was released on a PR bond with alcohol monitor tether. He is due back in court on 1/12/2023 for a probable cause hearing.  

ORIGINAL STORY: The Michigan State Police report that on Sunday, December 18, at approximately 9:50 am, Troopers from the Sault Ste Marie Post responded to the area of M-28 near County Rd. 444 in Lakefield Township in Luce County for a report of a two-vehicle injury accident.

Upon arrival, troopers found a Ford F250 being driven by a 19-year-old male subject from Newberry had been traveling east on M-28 about 1/2 mile east of County Rd 444 when it crossed over the centerline. The Ford F250 struck a Chrysler minivan head on which was being driven by Alice Nelson, a 64-year-old female also from Newberry.

The driver of the Ford F250 was treated at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Ms. Nelson was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash and the investigation remains ongoing.

Troopers were assisted by officers from the DNR, Columbus Township Fire Dept, Luce County Sheriff Department and Luce County EMS
