Frederick Garlinghouse

After 62 years of marriage Frederick Mark Garlinghouse, age 88, of Barbeau, MI passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at his home with family nearby. Fred married his sweetheart Doris (Long), the love of his life, on June 24, 1960 at Central United Methodist Church.

Fred was born on February 20, 1934, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to the late Mark and Elizabeth (Pope) Garlinghouse. He was a graduate of Sault High School with the class of 1952. Fred served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Then he worked for the Corps of Engineers as a welder until February 24, 1989, when he retired. Fred loved spending time in his garden and enjoyed his old tractors. He was able to build anything or fix whatever was broke which he did often for family and friends.

Fred was a longtime member of the Rosedale Community Church where he served in several different areas. He served as the treasurer of Child Evangelism Fellowship and North Star Habitat for Humanity for many years. He was also a founding member of the Bruce Township Fire Department and North Star Habitat for Humanity.

Fred is survived by his wife: Doris (Long) Garlinghouse of Barbeau, MI; he had five children: Deborah (Joe) Mullin of Petoskey,Barbara (Mark) Hoskins of Addison, Kathy (Jim) Casey of Sault Ste. Marie, Mark (Lori) Garlinghouse of Sault Ste. Marie, and Luke Garlinghouse of Barbeau; 11 grandchildren: Sam (Heather) Hoskins, Ken (Alissa) Hoskins, Rob (Ashley) Hoskins, Tom Mullin, Jake Mullin, Kris (Mel) Murtha, Ryan (Jen) Murtha, Jessica (Travis) Cryderman, Tylor (Courtney) Garlinghouse, Brandon (Samantha) Garlinghouse, and Nick (Jessica) Garlinghouse; and many great-grandchildren.

Fred is also survived by his siblings: Leon (Carol) Garlinghouse of Sault Ste. Marie, Bradley (Asnee) Garlinghouse of Virginia, Donald (Rita) Garlinghouse of Sault Ste. Marie, Diane (Perry) Cushman of Pickford, Randy (Adel) Garlinghouse of Virginia, Bill (Lisa) Jones of Kincheloe, and Tim (Jill) Jones of California; and a sister-in-law: Ruby Garlinghouse of Sault Ste. Marie.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Jerry Garlinghouse.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home with Pastor Hank Kott officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Kinross Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Rosedale Community Church or Tunnel to Towers.
