Crash in St. Ignace Leaves Local Man in Critical Condition

St. Ignace, MI – On Sunday, July 5, a Chevrolet pickup driven by Paul Grondin, a 70-year-old St. Ignace man, exited a gas station just west of the city limits on US-2. The driver apparently did not see a van driving west on US-2 and the van struck the pickup on the driver’s side.

After the impact, the pickup accelerated across US-2 and drove into a car wash where it became stuck by equipment. The driver, being unconscious, held his foot on the gas pedal causing the tires to spin and create a large cloud of white smoke in the area. Eventually, the vehicle itself, became on fire.

The St, Ignace Fire Department and the Straits Area EMS Authority attended the scene where the fire department extricated the driver from the vehicle. He was transported to Mackinac Straits Hospital where he was treated and then airlifted to a hospital in Grand Rapids for further treatment. He is listed in critical condition.

Grondin, a long-time resident of St. Ignace, served the city for many years. He served two terms on the St. Ignace Area Schools Board of Education and was then elected to the St Ignace City Council where he served for four years. He set his sights on being Mayor and was elected to the position in March 2006 and served three full terms.
