Father and Son Drown in Cheboygan County

Cheboygan, MI – July 5, 2025 – The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office reports a tragic double drowning that occurred on Burt Lake near Maple Bay Campground, Burt Township.

At approximately 3:21 p.m., Deputies responded to a distress call reporting two individuals in distress in the water. Witnesses on the scene indicated that a 16-year-old male from Levering had been underwater for approximately seven minutes. Further reports revealed that another male, his father, aged 54, also from Levering, entered the water to attempt a rescue of his 16-year-old son and subsequently drowned.

Cheboygan County Marine Patrol, with assistance from bystanders, arrived on the scene within minutes and successfully located the 54-year-old male underwater. Shortly thereafter, the 16-year-old male was pulled from the water.

Both victims were transported to the Maple Bay Boat Launch, where emergency life-saving measures were administered. Despite efforts, the 54-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 16-year-old male was transported to McLaren Petoskey, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident. At this time, drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the tragedy.

Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by: Cheboygan County Dive Team, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Pellston Fire Department/First Responders, and Cheboygan Life Support System.

– Always wear a life jacket when swimming or boating.

– Never swim alone—ensure a responsible adult is present.

– Stay within designated swimming areas and be aware of water conditions.

– Avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

– Learn and practice water rescue techniques and CPR.

– Keep emergency equipment, such as life rings and reaching poles, accessible.

The Sheriff’s Office extends condolences to the families affected by this tragic event and urges everyone to prioritize safety around water to prevent future tragedies.
