Friday night the lights were bright, and the bleachers were packed as the Sault High Community welcomed a number of alumni and guests to AJ Van Citters field to kick off their Hall of Fame weekend. The Inaugural Hall of Fame Class was introduced during the halftime of the varsity football game against the Marquette Sentinels. Archie Weston, Kris Bullock Dunbar, Whitney Bell, Lisa Corbiere Moran, Colin MacQuarrie, Todd Menard, Billy Anderson, Andy Stabile, Scott Marble, and Alice Deusing Nightingale were all recognized for their contributions to Sault High Athletics while Kathy Bell Forrest, Dr Tom Robinson, Thomas Farnquist and Glen Bailey were recognized as distinguished alumni. A banquet was held Saturday evening to celebrate the first group of Blue Devils to receive this recognition.
Weston, Bell, MacQuarrie, Menard and Anderson all played football for Sault High, and they or representatives from their family were able to cheer on this season’s Blue Devils in a very tough game against a strong Sentinels team. While the outcome was not in the Blue Devils’ favor, there were a number of athletes that led the team. Leading rusher was senior Cale Bell, who had 12 rushes for 61 yards. Junior Caleb Klier had 9 rushes for 23 yards. Sophomore quarterback Brylon Van Elswyk was 9 for 16 for 34 yards. Leading receiver for the Blue Devils was senior Evan Kennedy with 4 catches for 41 yards. On defense, leading tacklers were junior Marc DeWildt with 8, junior Wyatt Peabody with 7, and Bell with 6.
The JV Blue Devils also fell to Marquette on Thursday night.
The Blue Devils will host the Cedar Springs Red Hawks this Saturday in a double header, with the JV game starting at noon, and Varsity to follow.
