Ohman Closes Out Career at Ford Field

Sault High Senior Will Ohman wrestled his last match as a Blue Devil Friday at Ford Field. A two time qualifier for the MHSAA State Championships, Ohman was hoping to join the short list of Blue Devils that have placed at the State tournament. One of 1,120 wrestlers from across the state that qualified for this tournament, Ohman was wrestling up a weight class (144) and was heading into the tournament with an impressive 40-9 record. In the first round, Ohman was paired up with the number one seed, and eventual Division Two champion Owen Segorski from Lowell. Segorski won the match by pinfall. Ohman wrestled Victor Radu from Chelsea in consolation round one and held his own until the last few seconds of the match when Radu got the takedown and back points, winning 11-5. On making the second trip to Ford Field, Ohman shared    “just getting to be down on the field is a cool experience every time.”

Blue Devils’ Head Coach Jacinto Arreola reflected on the day. “While the Ford Field trip may not have concluded as planned, Will still showed that he belonged.” Not able to have a freshman season due to lack of interested athletes, “Will finishes his career with over 120 wins, a UP title, Two Trips to Ford Field, and countless gold medals from tournaments all over the state along the way.” Ohman is a big part of the program’s resurgence in the past two years, helping his team win the conference title in back to back seasons.

Though he hung up his Blue Devil singlet this weekend, this is not the end of his wrestling career. Ohman has committed to wrestle at Lakeland University in Wisconsin. “The people there are very nice and they’re recruiting a lot of U.P guys so I won’t be completely fresh arriving.” His parents Mitch and Anne Ohman couldn’t be prouder of their son. “We are just immensely proud of all his accomplishments. We can’t wait to see what happens in the future.”
