The Sault High Varsity football team recognized its thirteen seniors with their parents Friday night at AJ Van Citters field. The game unfortunately did not go their way, enduring a tough loss and falling 27-7 to Big North Conference rival, Petoskey.
Petoskey hit the field, ready to play. The Northmen were up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, and 21-0 at the half. The Sault’s lone touchdown was scored in the third quarter on a 4 yard pass from Callen Campbell to Camden Labadie. Aaron McLeod kicked the extra point. Petoskey scored once more in the third quarter, but no additional points were scored by either team in the final quarter of the game.
Leading rushers for the Blue Devils included Ryver Ryckeghem with 9 carries for 81 yards, Callen Campbell with 7 carries for 31 yards, and Kaydin Lujan with 8 carries for 21 yards. Campbell was 9 for 22 for 107 yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Seven different receivers caught a pass throughout the game. Labadie caught 2 passes for 42 yards and the touchdown, Ryan TenEyck caught 2 passes for 19 yards, and Ryckeghem caught 1 pass for 21 yards.
Defensively, there were a number of Blue Devils with big hits on the night. Lujan had 9 tackles, Chris Kiekhaefer had 6 tackles and 1 sack, Evan Arbic had 4 tackles, Cale Bell had 4 tackles, Brett Siesel had 4 tackles, Sawyer Kuenzer had 3 tackles and 1 sack, Campbell had 2 tackles and one sack, and Owen Horrigan had a fumble recovery.
The Sault Blue Devils (5-3) will host the Gaylord Blue Devils (8-0) on Friday at 7:00pm. This final game of the regular season is another Big North Conference match up.
