I’m Maverick with another edition of “Cat Tales.” I am shocked that I am still here. I’m in late stage kidney disease and things had been going south, so to speak, but when my IV fluids started to be given daily, I started perking up, although, with the changing of the seasons, I’m feeling rather lazy. My diagnosis hasn’t changed, and like my late grandma would have said “that ship has sailed.” But I am enjoying what time I have left. My mom says that’s important.
My blood test overall looked pretty good this last time. I even gained a little over half-a-pound, but my kidneys were a little worse, and that’s what matters, right now. I go back in a month and get it all repeated. I never mentioned this before, but I have a tumor on my thyroid. When she checked it last week, it hadn’t grown, but it is larger than a normal thyroid tumor. But my doctor said I looked really good. My skin isn’t dry anymore, and it’s been two months in a row that I have gained a little over half-a-pound and that’s really something good for me. I still eat turkey or chicken baby food during the day. My mom has a supplement that she mixes in to help my kidneys. After my daily IV, I get a Churu treat. Yummy! Then at night, I eat dry renal food.
I know a couple of months ago, I said my goodbye’s to everyone because I knew things could go bad very quickly. I wanted to make sure everyone knew how grateful I am that you read my column and how much I love each and everyone of you. I’m glad I did that because nobody knows when they’ll leave this earth, including me. That’s why it’s important to tell friends, family, and anyone special how much you love them. Make sure you give them lots of smooches and hugs, too.
I was thinking the other day that I have been very happy with my life, but there are a couple of things I wish I could have done. I don’t know if you remember or not, but a couple of years ago, I wanted to be the Soo Eagles mascot or be an additional Soo Eagles mascot. I asked, but I never got a response. Maybe they were scared that since I’m a cat that I would have eaten their big bird – the Eagle. I’m not that type of cat. I love birds. Besides, if anyone should be afraid it’s me. That bird is so much bigger than I am.
I sometimes wished too, that I could have been in paw-litics. I would have made a great president, and I love thinking about my mom being the “first mom.” I would have been nice to everyone. We wouldn’t be in a war, people would be able to afford groceries and gas for their cars, and we wouldn’t hurt our allies like our neighbors in Canada, and I would never say a bad thing about anyone or call them names. God doesn’t like that kind of behavior. Treating people and animals right is what I was taught. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what color you are, God tells us to love everyone. We’re not to judge either. God’s the only one that is to do that. We will all face judgement as the Bible teaches, someday. People sometimes forget that we’re all sinners, so we can’t judge others when we ourselves sin. That makes a lot of sense to me.
Last time, I told you about my little jingle that I sing when my mom gives me my daily IV of fluids. It goes something like this: “I wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, and I jiggle, jiggle, jiggle.” I kept repeating it and humming it, because I didn’t have any other words to go with it. A fan, Buddy, suggested I use the word giggle which is a great idea, but I need to put it all together somehow. Any ideas, anyone?
My mom is extremely busy these days. She had been made precinct captain in the town where we live for the party she endorses. It was a four year term. She had been busy planning an event and contacting members to make sure everyone was registered, if they needed any help filling out absentee ballot applications or anything else they may have had questions about. She hadn’t been sworn in for the four year term yet when she got a rough health diagnosis. So she resigned before she was sworn in. She didn’t think it fair to them or her to take the job when she is being sent to new specialists and has many appointments and tests ahead of her. But she still is active, and shows up at headquarters at least one day a week and sometimes brings work home with her, but she does it without the title. It’s an extremely busy time of year for her. I just sleep on one of the big pillow beds in our office, unless I’m working on my column like I am right now.
You should see our office. My desk, and my half of the room is nice and tidy. Her side looks like a tornado hit it. She has stuff pinned to the wall, post-it notes stuck to her laptop, and her desk. Papers, papers, and more papers, all over the place, but the crazy thing is, she seems to know where everything is. The other day she did a ton of filing. What a difference. Our office looks tidier now, but I think she needs an assistant for the future. She’s involved in many things and it’s hard to keep up on everything.
Before I forget I want to give a shout out to Leo, Leonard, and Lily. They are cats that belong to Kathy, my mom’s friend. She’s like my second mom, because she helped rescue me when I was shot. My mom and Kathy didn’t know me, and yet they helped me and loved me through a difficult time. They found me hiding under Princess Blue, my mom’s car. I am forever grateful.
I want to send another shoutout to Mittens and Lil who may just be my biggest fans. They have left comments many times on each month’s “Cat Tales,” and I love them very much even though I have never met them. My mom says she has friends like that too, that she has never met physically, but has made friends from emails, jobs, and phone calls. One is a friend whom she met through her job as international editor of a devotional company. They keep up with each other through snail mail and email. Once in a while they send packages to each other, too. Stephanie lives in London, and it’s fun for my mom to get things from there. One of her favorite gifts was a pen with the “Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.” My mom loves pens and that one is particularly special. Another friend of hers was met on a customer service phone call while making a complaint. She says sometimes God puts unknown people into our lives for reasons we can’t fathom. Sometimes it’s for a long time and other times the relationships are brief, and we don’t always know why. But they can be special for however long they last.
