Man in custody after armed standoff with police in Calumet

CALUMET, Mich. (WLUC) – The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has provided new information on the active situation in Calumet Tuesday.

At around 4:45 a.m., deputies were initially dispatched to a report of a fire in the roadway with “nails intentionally scattered” across the road at 25319 W. Pine St. in Calumet, according to a press release sent just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

After deputies tried to make contact, the resident of the home locked himself in the garage and refused deputy commands. He left the garage with a knife and entered his home, still refusing commands. 

While he was inside, the suspect was seen pointing a firearm at a deputy.

Deputies secured a perimeter around the house while they waited for an arrest warrant and search warrant. 

The Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team came to assist. When they got there, the search warrant was executed through their protocol, including an armored police truck that started tearing away portions of the home at around 12:40 p.m. While serving the warrant, the suspect left his house and threw large knives at the E.S. Team car and then went back into his home. 

After a short time, the suspect exited his home and was taken into custody without further incident. 

The investigation was assisted by the Michigan State Police and the MSP Emergency Support, Keweenaw County S.O., Laurium Police Department, Detectives from UPSET West, Houghton County Road Commission, MDOT, Mercy Ambulance and Calumet Fire.
