The Soo Indians Midget AAA hockey team opened up their regular season against Green Bay over the weekend and skated away with two victories.
In Saturday afternoon’s action, Green Bay drew first blood midway through the first period to take an early lead, but Treyce Moran evened the score after being set up by Marco Beaubien and Carter Huckson, then less a minute later Beaubien scored from Carson Unger and Jaxon Jara to give the Indians a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. In the second the Indians pressured the Bobcats but the only goal of the period came from a stretch pass from Aedan Haapala to Deven Jones-McDonald to send him in a breakaway to score giving the Indians a 3-1 lead through 2 periods. The Indians opened the third period scoring early as Wyatt Fischer scored from Moran and Tyler Neveau and at the 9 minute Mark Jordan Murray scored from Haapala for a 5-1 lead. Green Bay didn’t quit and came back to score a powerplay goal and then late in the period with their net empty scored a third goal. However Nathan Maguire shut the door from that point to preserve the 5-3 win turning away 25 shots.
The Sunday morning rematch saw the Indians come quick scoring 4 unanswered goals in the first period. Evan Hoglund scored his first of two from Deven Jones-McDonald and Jordan Murray, then added his second of the game from Jones-McDonald and Murray to go up two. Wyatt Fischer added another goal from Treyce Moran and Carter Huckson. Murray added a goal of his own from Hoglund and Jones-McDonald to round out the scoring in the first period up 4-0. The second period saw Green Bay capitalize on a powerplay to get on the board. Jones-McDonald added the fifth goal of the game for the Indians from Hoglund and Murray to close out the scoring. Isiah Anderson turned away 25 of 26 shots sent his way to earn the 5-1 win in net.
The Indians will now head to Detroit on Friday morning to compete at the MAHA Tier 1 showcase in Troy to start league action. Friday night at 8pm they will face the Oakland Grizzlies, then Saturday at 2:30 against the Compuware Ambassadors. The final game will be Sunday Morning 8am against the Chicago Mission.
