ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University women’s basketball program (6-19, 3-14 GLIAC) fell to the Grand Valley State Lakers (25-2, 16-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 77-42 on Thursday.
Grand Valley pushed out ahead early, but Lake State was able to close late with five straight points that was capped off with a three from Amanda Roach late in the opening quarter.
True freshman Grace Bradford opened up the second quarter by earning a trip to the free throw line to cut the lead back down to single digits. Grand Valley would push back ahead, but a few minutes later, Gracey Metz found Bradford for a basket down low before hitting a three of her own less than 30 seconds later as Grand Valley claimed a 35-21 lead going into the halftime break.
Margot Woughter opened up the scoring in the second half, and Bradford would go on a 5-0 scoring run by herself that featured a three that came as a result of a Brittany Bowman on the defensive end. However, Grand Valley continued to extend their lead, and despite a Woughter three-pointer and a late basket from Hannah Toutant, Grand Valley held on for the victory, securing the outright GLIAC Regular Season Championship.
Despite the loss, Bradford led the way for Lake Superior State with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Meanwhile, Mattison Rayman was able to secure 13 rebounds of her own while also picking up a pair of steals and a block on the defensive end of the floor.
The Lakers will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they face the Davenport Panthers with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
