On September 21, 2026, officers of the Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of the Fort Street Bridge for a reported crash involving a pickup truck and a bicyclist. The pickup truck was no longer at the scene when officers arrived.
Officers located the bicyclist with serious injuries. The bicyclist was transported to a hospital, has since been released, and is reported to be in stable condition. The bicyclist’s name is not being released.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office later recovered the pickup truck. Mark Mcleod, of Dafter, turned himself in at the 91st District Court on September 28, 2026. He was arraigned that day in connection with this incident on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and failure to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident. Bond was set at $50,000.
The incident remains under investigation by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department.
