Soo Indians split in rematch with Oakland

Saturday, September 17, the Soo Indians met with the Oakland Jr Grizzlies for the second time in this very short season when they hosted the Grizzlies at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste Marie. The Indians are coming off a loss to the Grizzlies when they played them last weekend at the Tier I Showcase in Detroit.

Saturday night’s game opened up with the Grizzlies starting off where they left off with a quick goal in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. Midway through the first, Sabre Koleber scored for the Soo on assists from Caden McDonald and Gabe Fisher to even up the score after one. Again, Oakland scored early in the second to regain the lead leaving the Soo to play catch-up. Luuca Weinkauf did just that on a powerplay with the assists going to Kyle Stevens and Koleber. Neither team could score in the third so the game went into overtime. In the 4-on-4, five-minute sudden death period, the Indians put everything they had into it and Ethan Chambers sent a pass to Drew Dellies who’s shot beat the Oakland goaltender trying to get across. Justin Bamberger had an excellent game in net and earned his first win with the 3-2 OT victory.

Sunday’s game wasn’t quite as exciting. Neither team could muster a goal until Oakland was able to score in the second frame. That lone goal held out until near the end of the game when the Soo pulled Cam Labadie from net for the extra attacker. Unfortunately, Oakland took control of the puck and scored an empty net goal to lock up the 2-0 victory. Labadie took the loss in net for the Soo

Next action for the Indians win be on the road in Grand Rapids where they will take on Fox Motors at the Southside Arena, Saturday at 620 and Sunday morning at 9am.
