City revises timeline and adds night-time schedule to W Portage reconstruction

Sault Ste. Marie, MI — Effective Tuesday, September 6th, Payne & Dolan will begin the West
Portage Avenue reconstruction project.

The project area will be from Easterday Avenue to Osborn Blvd. and will consist of the
rehabilitation of 1.548 miles of West Portage Avenue. The rehabilitation will consist of cold
milling the existing HMA surface in designated areas, HMA surface overlay of existing HMA
surface, concrete curb and gutter replacement in designated areas, pavement markings, and
sidewalk ramps at intersecting streets will be updated to ADA standards.

From the property owner meeting, it was determined that in order to be sensitive to business
clientele Payne & Dolan will operate from 10pm to 6am in the scope of Magazine Street to
Osborn Boulevard. Milling is estimated to take 1-2 nights, and paving would run similarly
after the area has been prepared. There will be no overnight parking in this area during these
construction operations. While the road will be barricaded, flaggers will be posted to allow for
through traffic to businesses that do not have any other means of access.

As part of the planning, bus tours, school bussing, and cruise ship traffic has been
considered. The city appreciates the cooperation of all area residents, businesses, and
motorists during this construction activity. For any questions regarding this project please
contact the City Engineering Department at 632-5734 as well as follow our Facebook page
@SSMCity.
