Ronald “Ron” Isaac McDonald, age 94, passed away at Cedar Cove Assisted Living in Cedarville, Michigan, on April 15, 2022. He was born in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, on December 17, 1927, to William Richard and Myrtle Margaruite (Mitchell) McDonald.
Ron grew up in Pickford, Michigan, and graduated from Pickford High School in 1945. He married Beatrice Thompson on December 1, 1951. He worked for the A&P Tea Company in Sault Ste Marie for a few years before transferring his employment to the Ignace branch for the next twenty-five years and living in St. Ignace, Michigan. During this time, he built a house in Pickford which he made his permanent home in the early 1980s—although he would sometimes spend the winters in Arizona and Florida—The Upper Peninsula was his true home. For the last ten years, Ron was a resident of Cedar Cover Assisted Living where he made many great friends.
Ron had many hobbies and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling around the U.S. One of his favorite past times was feeding the local deer on his property. He made special friends and relatives that brought him lots of joy in his later years.
Ron is survived by his sister, Gloria (Dave) Swick of Brimley, Michigan; sisters in law, Sherry McDonald of Rio Vista, California, Thelma Preston of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Lorna (Eugene) McIntyre of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Ethel (Edwin) Sherman of Sault Ste Marie; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents, William and Myrtle McDonald; wife, Beatrice McDonald; brothers, Davis R, McDonald, who was killed in action in World War II, and Dale McDonald; sister-in-law, Mary (Jim) Wellington; and brothers in law, Don Preston, Otto (Irene) Thompson, Norman (Maxine) Thompson, John Thompson, Milford Thompson, Roy Thompson, Raymond Thompson, and Howard (Georgeanna) Thompson.
Services are planned for April 26, 2022, at Cedar Cove, 266 S Mary L St, Cedarville, MI 49719. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM.
The final resting place will be at Cottle Cemetery in Marquette Township, Pickford, Michigan.
