Robert James McKerchie, Jr

Robert James McKerchie, Jr. passed away at his family home on Sugar Island in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Sunday February 13th, 2022, at the age of 48.

James was born in Dearborn, MI on March 18, 1973, to Anita McKerchie and Robert J. McKerchie Sr. and resided in Sault Ste. Marie, MI for the majority of his life. He was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and worked in the dredging/marine construction field for the last 25 years. 4 years ago, he acquired his captain’s license.  

James was devoted to his family, friends, and his favorite place to be, Sugar Island.  He was always ready to help and lend a hand whenever needed. 

James is survived by his wife of 30 years: Jennifer “Jena” McKerchie, Nee Carr, his son: James McKerchie III.  and his daughter: Emily McKerchie (David Seppala). He is also survived by his mother: Anita McKerchie; his siblings: Craig McKerchie (Tina Janiga), Tara McKelvie, Jason (Shavon) McKerchie, Brandon (Tracy) McKerchie, Tiffany Menard, and Stacy (Dave) Daley; and his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including his best friend: Dale Miller of Sugar Island.Traditional visitation and services will be held at the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building, 11 Ice Circle, Sault Ste, Marie, MI, beginning on Wednesday February 16th at 10:00 AM and will continue until the final ceremony on Friday February 18th at 10:00 AM.  James will be laid to rest at Maple Ridge Cemetery on Sugar Island following the ceremony.  A luncheon will be served following the burial back at the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building.
