Joyce Marie Haan

Joyce Marie (Fritch) Haan, 91, passed away on November 19, 2021, at Lakeland Health Care Center in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

She was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on July 17, 1930, to William and Ida Fritch. She graduated from Creston High School and attended Grand Rapids Junior College, where she met and then in 1950 married Vernon, her loving partner for 67 years. With Vernon, she raised a family and involved herself in community affairs through Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church in Stewartsville, NJ and Grace United Methodist Church in Lake Bluff, IL, forming many long-lasting friendships. Joyce and Vernon restored a Greek Revival house on Mackinac Island, MI and established a bed-and-breakfast there, Haan’s 1830 Inn, which has passed down the generations as the family business. On retirement in 1989, they moved to Lake Geneva, WI, and helped set up the Geneva Lakes Museum, where many of Joyce’s antiques are on display, collected in extensive travels through the US.

Joyce is survived by her son David, grandchildren Jacob Haan and Shannon (Lucas) Westblade, their mother Nancy, son-in-law Will Myers and daughter-in-law-emeritus Patty Hovel, and great-grandchildren Gideon and Adelheid Westblade. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, her sons Nicholas and Bradley, and her brother Robert Fritch and sister Virginia Johnson.

Memorial services will be deferred until spring, to take place on Mackinac Island.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family asks for donations in Joyce’s memory to the Geneva Lakes Museum, 255 Mill Street, Lake Geneva, WI 53147.
