NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forward Chase Tallaire (Soo Eagles), goaltender Gavin McCarthy (Timmins Rock) and forward Ty McHutchion (Espanola Express) have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Oct. 17.

CHASE TALLAIRE, (F) SOO EAGLES – In a trio of Eagles’ victory over the weekend, the 18-year-old St. Ignace, Mich., product had goals and points in each of them, helping his Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., side move into a share of top spot in the NOJHL’s West Division.

Two of Tallaire’s tallies were game-winners raising his league-best mark in that category to four on the season.

He also shares the NOJHL-lead in power play markers with four and has jumped into a tie for third in overall offensive production with 14 points on 10 goals and four assists.

The Eagles forward enters play this week riding a nine-game point streak.

GAVIN MCCARTHY, (G) TIMMINS ROCK – Heading into a first-place showdown in Powassan Friday, McCarthy made 31 saves in backstopping the Rock to a road victory over the Voodoos.

Then on Sunday, the 18-year-old from Athens, Ont., handled 23 of the 24 attempts he saw to help lead his club to a home ice triumph over Kirkland Lake to send Timmins into sole possession of first place in the NOJHL standings.

McCarthy wrapped up his week with a 1.50 goals-against average along with a .947 save percentage.

He presently paces all league netminders in wins with six and dating back to last season has sported a record of 9-0-1-0 in his past 10 appearances.

TY MCHUTCHION, (F) ESPANOLA EXPRESS – A productive weekend for the 16-year-old rookie from Brantford, Ont., buoyed the fortunes of Espanola, as the Express finished off a 2-0-1-0 run.

McHutchion set-up the deciding goal vs. Greater Sudbury Friday, had another assist in an overtime setback to the Soo Thunderbirds Saturday, then notched his first NOJHL hat trick, which included the game-winner, and doled out an assist to send the Express to victory Sunday in Elliot Lake.

As one of the youngest players in the league, his six points in the time frame moved him into a share of third spot in league rookie numbers, with 11.

He’s also tied for second in goals among first-year skaters with seven.
