Eagles strike early and hard to take control of Elliot Lake Vikings

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A couple of early third period goals by Harmon Esch, including the eventual game-winner, helped the Soo Eagles defeat the Elliot Lake Vikings 6-3 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matchup at Pullar Stadium.

Picking up the lone marker in the first period was the Eagles’ Anthony Mayes as he struck shorthanded at 12:41 by cranking in a blast after Alex Povorozniouk outmuscled multiple defenders down low and put a feed in front that was promptly hammered in.

With the well-earned assist, Povorozniouk extended a consecutive game point streak to nine.

Sault Ste. Marie kept it going in the second stanza as they tacked on two more to go up 3-0.

Samuel Gold began the outburst midway through the frame as he got his own rebound after a wrap around attempt and chipped it in on Vikings’ netminder Jacob Kirstein.

They then saw Jayden Rothmeyer add to the home side’s cushion at 14:52 when he collected a loose puck in front off a Mise’l Isadore shot from the left point and stuffed it in.

Capping it off quickly in the third, Esch off a turnover, and another via a sharp angle shot saw him tally twice in the opening 28 seconds of the session.

Elliot Lake eventually put one past Soo goalkeeper Dalton Hoornstra when Sloan Kroeker picked up his first NOJHL goal, which came during a man advantage as he worked his way down the left side from the point and wired one upstairs at 7:47.

The Eagles then saw Gabriel Clark lift one in from distance while up a skater to help get that back.

Continuing to battle, Jayden Becken chipped in a chance for the Vikings at 13:38 before Armando Rojo-Bolton supplied an impressive dash up ice that he converted on to pull the guests to within three.

However, that’s as close as they would get before time expired as the Soo skated off with the victory.
