Alexander Merton Fisher

Alexander Merton Fisher, age 69, of DeTour, Michigan, died on October 25, 2021, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born on October 5, 1952, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Alexander Percy and Dolores Jean (Gibbons) Fisher.

Alex started his childhood on Drummond Island, Michigan, before his family moved to Toledo, Ohio. He returned to Drummond Island in 1968 and graduated from Detour High School. He started working at the Drummond Island Ferry as a deckhand before he moved to DeTour in 1975. He quickly received his captains license and began his career as captain. Alex began coaching sports and enjoyed it and all the children he coached. He married the love of his life Linda Marie Hawkins on October 5, 1995, in Sault Ste. Marie. Alex coached for thirty-three years and retired from the Drummond Island Ferry after working for thirty-six years. Alex and Linda renewed their vows at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour. He served as the athletic director for Detour Area Schools until he became ill.

Alex was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Alex was an Ohio State Buckeyes Fan!! He not only like to watch all sports, but also played basketball, softball, golf, and tennis. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling to Florida, with Linda.

Alex is survived by his wife, Linda Fisher; sons, Pattrick Anderson of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Kyle Fisher of Tennessee; daughters, Jessica “Louie” (Philip Ledford) Fountain, Claire “Bear” (Steven) LaPlaunt of Sault Ste Marie, Michele “Bubba” Fisher of Tennessee, and Cory Sherlund of DeTour; grandchildren, Rachelle Fountain, Justin Fountain, Katie Sherlund, Samantha LaPlaunt, and Isabell Sherlund; sisters, Josie “Seif” (Richard) Benoit of Sault Ste. Marie and Bobbi Dee “Bruce Babie” O’Grady of Cheboygan, Michigan; brother-in-law, Bill (Kate) Hawkins of California; many nieces and nephews; and exchange students, Nina Verdelli, Neeske Beckman, and Celine Reddehase.

Alex is preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Glasser; and sister, Janet (Paul) Davidovich; father & mother-in-law, Bill & Audrey Hawkins.

Visitation will be held on November 1, 2021, from 11:00 AM till 2:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:00 PM.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour.
