Evelyn Mae Massaway

Evelyn Mae Massaway, age 92 of St. Ignace, Michigan passed away peacefully with family present September 10, 2021, in St. Ignace. She was born April 14, 1929, in Crystal, Michigan to Homer and Mary {Bryde} Smith.

When Evelyn was five, her parents and sisters moved to St. Ignace where she attended St. Ignace Area Schools and graduated in 1947. She went on to attend Cosmetology School in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Evelyn then went to Detroit to work with her sister at her Beauty Salon. Returning to St. Ignace, Evelyn worked in a beauty salon and met Wally. They were married on June 17, 1950, in St. Ignace where they raised their family. Wally and Evelyn owned the Coffee Shop Restaurant in the 1950’s, the Flame Restaurant from 1970 to 1982 and the Zodiac Restaurant until 1995. Evelyn worked hard to make sure the restaurants were kept spotless, and the employees were happy. She loved the business and enjoyed working with people. When they retired, they visited Evelyn’s parents and sister in Florida. They also enjoyed taking mini vacations to visit friends in Wisconsin and travel to Las Vegas. She always loved to spend time with her grandchildren when she could. Evelyn would get together with her friends a couple times a week to play cards. A pass time they all enjoyed.

Evelyn was a member of the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Wallace “Tom” {Susan} Massaway Jr, of St. Louis, Michigan, Pamela {Chuck} Mapes of St. Ignace, Daryl Massaway of St. Ignace, Keith {Jean} Massaway of St. Ignace, and Roger Massaway of St. Johns, Michigan, 16 Grandchildren, Christy {Todd}Schlegel, Brandon Mapes, Tyler {Anna}Mapes. Jaclyn {Eric}Ingraham, Angela Mapes, Kalynn {Jason}Everitt, Brian {Angela}Massaway, Shannon {Justin}Gibson, Angela {Jim}Ianitelli, Melissa {Denny}Sorenson, Jenny Massaway, Jessica {Louie}Mullins, Andrew [Miki}Massaway, Stephen {Bria}Massaway, Ayla Ebaugh and Aiden Ebaugh, 20 Great Grandchildren, Mira, Mason, Memphis, Lyle, Landon, Adalyn, Maya, Lilly, Jude, Kane, Ava, Elise, Timothy, Marjorie, Finley, Weston, Fletcher, Kira, Kayson, and Kaiya.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Wally, parents Homer and Mary, sisters Betty Yack and Wanda Snyder.

Visitation will be held September 24, 2021, at the St, Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. To 12:00 p.m. with a Funeral Service to follow at 12:00 p.m.

Final Resting Place will be St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Cemetery in St. Ignace, Michigan.

All Donations will be going into the Community Foundation for Sault Tribe Youth.
