Michael Ellis

Michael Wayne Ellis brightened every room he walked into. “Chubba,” as he was affectionately known by so many, loved a good time, and was a brilliant mind. His intelligence and wit were often unparalleled. Mike was a man of deep religious convictions, and loved learning about his beloved Catholic faith. Aside from spending time with the prides of his life, his daughter, Marnie and grandchildren, Allaire and Jack, Mike loved reading about religion, history, and music. Mike also had a passion for sports, especially hockey. In Mike’s own words, “I’m pretty sure a hockey rink is the closest God will allow us to heaven at this time.” When it came to music, Mike loved a wide spectrum of artists, ranging from Frank Sinatra to Neil Diamond and any classic rock music from the 60’s and 70’s. But nothing compared to his love for the band KISS. Mike loved road trips with family and friends to see KISS in all different venues across the state; so much so, that he was approaching seeing his favorite band two dozen times.

Mike was born on September 20, 1966 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and attended Sault Area High School. He graduated from Lake Superior State University with a bachelor’s in history and master’s in learning disabilities. Mike spent the last 18 years teaching for Sault Area Schools where he spent much of his time guiding students with learning disabilities enrolled in the district’s special education programs, and teaching social studies at the high school level. Mr. Ellis, as his students knew him as, was always quick with a joke and had a way with words. There was seemingly no question Mr. Ellis couldn’t effortlessly answer.

Mike leaves behind a long list of family and friends. Mike is survived by his daughter and his son-in-law Marnie (Ellis) and Andrew Rubinstein; grandchildren Allaire Rubinstein and Jack Rubinstein; brothers Clayton (Lynda) Ellis, and Timothy (Lindsay) Ellis; nephew Zachary Ellis; numerous aunts, cousins, and loving extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Jack and Mary (Millar) Ellis.

A small funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish, with Celebrant Michael Chenier, on Monday, December 21, 2020, for the immediate family only. A memorial Mass and celebration of life party will be planned for late spring/early summer 2021 for family, friends, and students. Mike will be buried at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Clark Funeral Cremation Burial Services assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, if anyone would like to make a donation in Mike’s honor, please make a check payable to Sault Area Public Schools, and put “Ellis” in the memo line. The family will be establishing a scholarship in Mike’s memory. Checks can be sent to 876 Marquette Avenue, Sault Ste Marie, MI 49783. Online condolences may be left at www.rgalerfuneralhome.com
