Suspect Arrested Following Break-In at DeTour Area Public Schools

Chippewa County, Michigan. Authorities arrested a suspect after a break-in at DeTour Area Schools. The incident prompted school officials to cancel classes on October 1st. There is no known danger to the school, students, faculty, or the community.

On October 1, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a report of a subject who had broken into and was still inside DeTour Area Schools. School staff had arrived early to prepare for the school day when they saw the suspect inside the school, prompting them to call 911.

Troopers arrived, located the suspect, and took him into custody. Troopers found no weapons with the suspect. Troopers determined the suspect had damaged property inside the school, including computers, and had left some areas in disarray.

Due to the necessary cleanup and assessment of the damage, school officials initially delayed the start of school before ultimately canceling classes for the day on October 1, 2026. According to school officials, classes are tentatively scheduled to resume as normal on October 2, 2026.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man from DeTour Village, was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on charges of Breaking and Entering and Malicious Destruction of Property. The investigation is ongoing. The suspect’s name is not being released at this time, pending arraignment. The suspect is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
