SAULT STE. MARIE — A local police officer has been formally recognized for his quick thinking and bravery during a critical, life-or-death emergency on the East Portage Avenue Bridge.
Officer Raymond Brooks had the distinct honor of presenting Officer Michael Rand with a Lifesaving Commendation Award during a recent ceremony, celebrating his heroic actions in preventing a tragic loss of life.
The incident began when Officer Rand responded to an urgent distress call regarding an individual in crisis. Dispatch reports indicated that the person intended to self-harm, potentially by entering the river or utilizing sharp objects.
Officer Rand immediately began a coordinated sweep of local infrastructure, checking nearby overpasses and waterways. His search led him to the East Portage Avenue Bridge, where he successfully located the individual. Moments later, the situation escalated dramatically as the person climbed over the bridge’s safety railing.
Demonstrating exceptional composure under pressure, Officer Rand engaged the individual in conversation. Utilizing tactical communication, he managed to keep the subject distracted long enough to close the physical distance between them. In a split-second window of opportunity, Officer Rand lunged forward and firmly grabbed the person’s arm, safely pulling them back over the railing.
Even after securing the individual from the edge, danger remained. Officer Rand maintained strict situational awareness and control of the scene, safely disarming the individual by removing a knife from their hand without further incident.
Department leadership praised the officer’s performance, noting that his actions serve as an inspiring example of courage, sound judgment, and profound compassion in the line of duty. Thanks to his swift intervention, the individual was safely secured and transported to receive the necessary care.
