Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting Under Investigation in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A fatal officer-involved shooting is under investigation following a violent incident that began shortly after 1 p.m. in the 1000 block of Alpine Avenue NW in Grand Rapids.

According to preliminary information obtained from police chief Joe Trigg on the live press conference, police were dispatched after a family member reported that another family member was armed with a knife and threatening violence.

When officers arrived, the suspect allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a police vehicle. The incendiary device struck the patrol vehicle and caught fire. Officers were able to extinguish the flames, and the suspect retreated back inside the residence.

Police attempted to use less-lethal force to take the suspect into custody, but those efforts were unsuccessful. The suspect later emerged from the home armed with a second Molotov cocktail while officers were attempting to safely remove multiple family members from the residence.

The suspect then fled on foot, prompting officers to pursue him. During the chase, the suspect allegedly attempted an armed carjacking involving a citizen before continuing to flee.

A K-9 unit was deployed to assist in the apprehension. During the encounter, the suspect reportedly stabbed the police dog at least three times. Officers again attempted to use less-lethal force, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Police say the suspect then charged at officers while armed with a knife. An officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect. Despite emergency medical efforts, the suspect later succumbed to his injuries.

As is standard procedure, the involved Grand Rapids police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The shooting is being investigated by the Michigan State Police. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.

The male suspect’s name has not been released at this time.
