WEXFORD COUNTY, MICH: On August 28, at approximately 9:40 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post responded to a two vehicle traffic crash on US131, north of the Cadillac rest area in Clam Lake Township.
The preliminary investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle failed to properly secure a liquid tar construction trailer. The trailer became detached and remained in the middle of the travel lane on US131. A southbound vehicle driven by a 50-year-old man from California struck the trailer. A second southbound vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old man from Oscoda, also struck the trailer and then collided with the first vehicle.
During the troopers’ investigation, it was discovered that the trailer displayed an illegal license plate from Texas, and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) was obstructed and damaged.
This portion of the roadway was restricted to one lane due to ongoing construction. The crash caused significant damage to the newly constructed highway, which was closed for several hours.
No injuries were reported.
“Leaving a piece of equipment in the travel lane of a roadway poses a serious risk to motorists,” said Lt. Ashley Miller. “It was left in the only lane open in a construction zone, and during the hours of darkness. We are thankful there were no injuries or fatalities.”
The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers are asking the public for assistance in identifying the vehicle that was hauling the trailer. Anyone with information is asked to call the MSP Cadillac Post at (231) 779-6040.
Troopers were assisted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Wexford County Road Commission, Cadillac City Fire Department, and Mobile Medical Response (MMR).
