More than 200 join virtual EGLE hearing on Line 5 tunnel water discharge plan

MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A key permit tied to the proposed Line 5 Tunnel Project drew hours of public comment Thursday, as supporters and opponents made their case to state environmental regulators.

The Line 5 Tunnel Project would lie in the Straits of Mackinac.

More than 200 people attended a virtual hearing hosted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

The discussion centered on Enbridge’s request to discharge treated water into Lake Michigan during construction of the proposed tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

Opponents raised concerns about potential impacts to the Great Lakes, while supporters argued the project would improve safety and create jobs.

State regulators are accepting public comments through June 30 and are expected to make decisions on several permits next month.
