Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Traverse City Post responded to Voice Road in Kingsley for a 54-year-old man who was experiencing a mental crisis and attempting to walk into traffic. Upon arrival, troopers quickly established rapport with the man, who voluntarily agreed to be transported to Munson Medical Center for medical treatment.
Shortly after the trooper’s departure, the man walked away from the hospital and was later observed walking toward the West End Beach, where he entered the cold waters in an apparent attempt to harm himself.
Officers from the Traverse City Police Department, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan State Police responded to the scene. Law enforcement officers and Traverse Metro Fire Department deployed rescue boats and contacted the man. A Traverse City Police officer successfully engaged the individual in conversation and persuaded him to board the boat.
The man was safely transported to shore and subsequently taken by ambulance to Munson Medical Center for continued medical care.
