Mackinac Bridge auctioning off 96 circulated tokens

The Mackinac Bridge is auctioning off bridge tokens that stopped being accepted at the end of 2022.

According to the bridge, there are 96 used circulated tokens being auctioned off in various conditions and random tokens.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority stopped accepting tokens as of Sept. 10, 2019, but still was taking token redemption up until the end of 2022.

Officials said less than 1% of all tokens issued remained in circulation as of October 2022.

“Only a few customers bring in tokens anymore for reimbursement and there is quite a paperwork process each time they do,” MBA Bridge Director Kim Nowack said in October 2022. “We’ve given customers three years to sell back their tokens to us and it’s time to turn remaining tokens into collectors’ items.”

The auction goes through Aug. 15 and is available on the GovDeals website.

Over the years, the MBA issued a variety of token versions available in rolls of 24.

  1. After yesterday’s fiasco of taking just under 2 hours to cross the Bridge because of yet another ‘parade during peak hours’, I wouldn’t take them if they were free ! It is ridiculous to have an event where the Bridge is gridlocked for nearly a day so people can show off and joy ride their ‘min-cars’. The amount of fossil fuels wasted from a 2-hour traffic jam caused by ‘fuel efficient vehicles’ was a joke. You can throw the coins over the Bridge railing and into the water where they belong !

    • The mini group had no idea the construction was going to be there. All there tools for 1100plus cars was prepaid and a special lane through just for them. The groupware told construction would be over before last Saturday. After stuff got backed up most were told to abort and did so. Due to construction. The group tried their best to correct course best they could. But, you cannot just exit once entering area. BTW do you realize how much money the group brought into St. IGNACE, Mackinaw and surrounding area for the weekend. Over 1100 cars buying gas/tolls and supplies. Over 3000 people buying food, lodging and entertainment. For three days. I am sorry you feel so incovienced for your two hours of time. Because of a event that hS not last happened since 2019. I think your attitude towards coins was uncalled for. Don’t worry you should not have to worry about Minis again until 2025.
