Laker Men’s Tennis Put a Leash on the Bulldogs

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Lake Superior State University men’s tennis program (5-3) earned a 4-3 victory over the Barton Bulldogs (2-7) at the 2023 PTR Spring Tennis Fest on Thursday.

The Bulldogs struck early in doubles play with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot, but the duo of Jordi Fraile Raton and Raul Velasco Garcia earned a dominant 6-1 win of their own at the No. 2 doubles position. With the doubles point on the line, the pairing of the ITA 67th ranked Aaron Osmond and his teammate Maxence Hamon came away with a clutch 6-3 win at the top doubles position to secure the doubles point.

The Bulldogs tied up the score at 1-1 after claiming the top singles spot, but Hamon answered right back with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 singles match to retake the lead. Barton was able to narrowly defeat Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain), despite a strong opening set by the freshman, by a final score of 2-6, 7-5, 1-0[10-4], but the Lakers once again responded, this time in the form of Fraile asserting his dominance in the opening set before locking in to take the final two games of the second for the 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 4 spot. However, the Bulldogs extended the match the full distance by taking the No. 5 singles match to tie up the match at 3-3, placing all eyes on Velasco.

With the match on the line, Velasco battled his way to taking the opening set 6-4, and he would follow that up with some of his best tennis of the season, winning the second set 6-1 and clinching the win over Barton for his team, marking his third match-clinching victory of the season.

The Lakers will look to wrap up the 2023 PTR Spring Tennis Fest with a winning record in the Palmetto State when they take on regional foe, Lewis, on Friday, March 10 with the first serve scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
