Laker Women’s Tennis Pick Up First Win of the Season Over Lawrence Tech

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lake Superior State women’s tennis program (1-2) picked up their first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils (0-5) on Saturday.

Julia Fraile Raton and Martina Oviedo set the tone early in doubles play with a dominant 6-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match, but the Blue Devils responded with a narrow 7-6 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, barely defeating the duo of Maddie Whip and Tayla Brasier by two points in a tiebreaker. However, the pairing of Marilou Cote and Valentina Parodi secured the early advantage for the Lakers with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles spot to take the doubles point.

Whip wasted no time bouncing back from a loss in doubles for an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles match, and Brasier would take the No. 3 spot after a hard-fought second set, 6-0, 7-6. Then, the freshman Parodi picked up a victory in the No. 4 singles match by a score of 6-3, 7-6 after a clutch performance in the second set tiebreaker to clinch the Lakers’ first team victory of the season.

With the match already in hand, the remaining matches would still be played out.

Oviedo extended the lead with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot, but the Blue Devils would finally get on the board with a three-set win at No. 1 singles. However, that lone victory is all they would be allowed as Raton was able to shake off dropping her opening set, 4-6, to dominate the second and third by a score of 6-1 in each.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Feb. 17 when they travel to take on Walsh with the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
