Rudyard boys roll into the regional finals, girls advance to quarters (with photos)

The Rudyard Bulldogs boys’ basketball team kept on rolling on Tuesday night, as they defeated the Mackinaw City Comets, 78-53, in a Division 4, Region 26 semifinal, at the Harris Kahl Gymnasium in Rudyard.

EJ Suggitt led all scorers with 28 points for the Bulldogs, including 14 in the second quarter. Tate Besteman added 26 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter for Rudyard, while Cam Peterson added 12. Kal O’Brien had 27 points for Mackinaw City who end their season at 14-5. Rudyard (16-2) advances to the regional final in Pellston on Thursday night, where they will take on Alanson (14-7). The Vikings upset Onaway, 59-54 in the other regional semifinal on Tuesday. In girls’ basketball on Wednesday night, the Rudyard Bulldogs have already advanced to their first ever quarterfinal, as Mackinaw City had to opt out of their scheduled regional final in Wolverine because of COVID-19. Rudyard (12-5) will play the winner of tonight’s regional final between Ewen-Trout Creek (17-1) and Carney-Nadeau (20-0). That game will be played on Monday night at 7:00 pm, in a location to be determined. You can hear that game on Country 105 and online at country105fm.net, with Scott Nason and Ray Bell, starting with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.

St. Ignace (14-4) will face Calumet (18-0) in their regional final in girls’ basketball on Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie at 7:00 pm.
