Obituary For Douglas John Hunter, Sr
Douglas “Waabshki Ngig” John Hunter Sr., age 63, of Brimley, Michigan, died on September 16, 2026, at his home. He was born on October 9, 1962, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, to Jay and Linda (McCance) Hunter.
Douglas grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Bay Mills, Michigan. Throughout his working years, he held various jobs, including commercial fishing, construction, excavating, truck driving, and security at the casino. He medically retired in 2023.
Douglas was a member of the Bay Mills Indian Community in Brimley, Michigan.
In his free time, Douglas enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and snaring rabbits. He was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed watching historical documentaries and keeping up with the news. Douglas also had a passion for beading, an art he took great pride in and enjoyed throughout his life.
Douglas is survived by his children, Douglas Hunter Jr. of Arizona, Alonzo Napelee of Kingsford, Michigan, Jay Hunter of New York, New York, and Ian (Alicia) Hunter of Wilson, Michigan; grandchildren, Alexis Harris, Damian Schwiderson, and Jackson Keshick; father, Jay Hunter of Kingsford; siblings, Sharon Hunter of Kingsford, Gail Culpepper of Oregon, Jefferey (Debra) Hunter of Kingsford, Lori (Alexander) Teeple of Bay Mills, Angelo Sylvester of Bay Mills, and Alexander Sylester of Bay Mills; and many nieces and nephews.
Douglas was preceded in death by his mother, Linda; sister, Rita Hunter; and nephew, Robert Teeple.
Visitation will begin on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Bay Mills Cultural Center, 12498 W. Tower Road, Brimley, MI 49715. Pipe Ceremony will begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue until the Traditional Ceremony on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow the ceremony, with a luncheon to be held afterwards.
Douglas’s final resting place will be Mission Hill Cemetery in Brimley, Michigan.
