What is Castle Rock?
Castle Rock has been in the Eby family since 1929, when Clarence and Helen Eby opened it to tourists.
The natural limestone formation located about 3 miles north of St. Ignace in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, near Interstate 75 and the Straits of Mackinac.
The towering rock rises nearly 196 feet above Lake Huron, or about 183 feet above the highway. Formed through erosion following the Ice Age, the geological landmark was left standing as surrounding land wore away.
For a dollar, visitors can climb an outdoor staircase to its summit for panoramic views of Lake Huron, Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge.
On Monday, Oct. 19, the roadside attraction closed for the season after its 97th year, it announced on Facebook.
