Raw Sewage Discharged Into Lake Superior In Sault Ste. Marie

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy says that sewer main on the west side of Sault Ste. Marie was damaged Monday afternoon during a utility installation.

Because efforts to pump the lift station’s wet well couldn’t keep up, the city discharged raw sewage to Lake Superior for several hours until a repair was made near Sherman Park.

The issue was resolved as of 5:10 p.m.
