Michigan Prisoner Charged with Brutal Slaying of His Own Cellmate

A Michigan prison inmate is now charged with First-Degree Murder in a killing prosecutors describe as exceptionally brutal.

Authorities allege 50-year-old Aaron Samir Akel strangled his 73-year-old cellmate inside Macomb Correctional Facility on April 22, 2026.

Prosecutors say the victim was then stabbed in one eye and impaled through the other with a broken broomstick handle.

The victim, Daniel Hosmer, was serving prison sentences for multiple First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct convictions involving children under 13, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records.

Akel was arraigned Monday and remains behind bars while serving an unrelated prison sentence.
