KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners continued their solid start to the campaign when they defeated the Soo Eagles 6-4 Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Eventually moving to 7-0 when scoring first in a game, the Gold Miners connected midway through the first period when Jacob Demers went in on the left side, fired a shot, then collected his own rebound and put it past Eagles’ netminder Dalton Hoornstra.
Rebounding later in the session, Sault Ste. Marie banged in a pair of tallies off the stick of defenceman Gabriel Clark.
His initial effort saw him lift a shot through traffic that sailed past Kirkland Lake starter Morgan Hyndman.
Clark then collected his second, five minutes later, at 18:21 with a snap shot from the top of the right circle that leaked through Hyndman and trickled across the goal line.
Moving to the second period, the home side pulled even early as a Tysen Anderson stretch pass found Ben Guimaraes in behind the Soo defence and saw him race in alone where he wired a shot past the blocker of Hoornstra.
More from Guimaraes at 13:59, featured getting the last touch off a couple of rebounds before easing in a backhand into the open corner.
Scoring for a fifth straight outing, the Eagles’ Harmon Esch chipped in the leftovers off a Matthew Zaharias chance from up high that hit teammate Anthony Mayes before falling to the ice and being put in.
Coming back to retake the lead prior to the intermission, the Gold Miners’ Yosef Pievsky spun in front and slid in a rebound off a Thomas Hudon shot.
In the third period, Kirkland Lake took a two-goal lead in the opening minute courtesy of Demers as he finished off an Owen O’Grady chance, who had cut out from in deep.
Darren Mayhew did bring the visitors back to within one at 15:59 as he stuffed in a wrap around.
However, the hosts secured the result thanks to Hudon before time expired as he heaved one down the length of the ice from deep in his own territory into an empty net.
With the victory, Kirkland Lake wins for a 10th time this season, improving to an impressive 10-2-1-0 overall.
In defeat, the Soo slides to 8-5-1-0.
