On June 18, 2026, at approximately 1:40p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department were dispatched to a residence on Young Street for a report of multiple gunshots having been fired at a residence. While enroute, responders were advised that a man shot himself.
Officers arrived on scene and determined that a nearby residence had been shot multiple times. Officers were able to determine that an occupant of that residence received minor injuries from glass debris. Officers made contact at the other neighboring residences to determine that there were no additional injuries and that there were no additional suspects.
During the investigation, officers were able to determine that there had been a domestic dispute before the shooting. The investigation also determined that the man shot multiple rounds into the neighboring residence before he returned to his own residence and turned the gun on himself. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department would like to express our sincerest condolences to the families and friends who were affected by this incident. The names of the parties involved are not being released at this time.
We would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance during this incident; Chippewa County Central Dispatch, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Tribe Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the Chippewa County Victim’s Services Unit.
