Here I am again with the latest edition of “Cat Tales.” I hope everyone is doing well. Where my mom and I are living right now, it is warm or warmer than it was. And that feels good. I had been laying on my electric warming pad a lot in February. Brrrr. It was a cold month, and my mom just paid the gas bill that proves it.
I am so proud of Spaghetti Betty. When she found out I was a writer, Spaghetti Betty said she wished she could do something like me. I told her that she already had a talent in designing clothes and that she should pursue that on a much larger scale. Her face lit up, and she gave me a high-paw and a hug. She started right in pursuing her dream. The only thing is she made me wear some of her designs. I don’t like dressing up, with the exception of my writing outfit that consists of an orange checked bow tie and an orange french beret (see my profile at the bottom of this page). My mom tells me all the time that I look very sophisticated. My face lights up with a cheesy grin whenever she says that.
Anyway, Spaghetti Betty’s Grandma, who is living in the Sault now and helping Spaghetti Betty sew, sent some of her designs to an old friend in California, who liked them so much that she wanted Spaghetti Betty to showcase them on the catwalk. She’s so talented and amazing. I’m in awe of her talent. She gathered up some of her designs and she and her grandma flew to California for a mini show. I heard it was cattastic. She put her paw down though, when they asked her to model. She refused saying her talents were in design and not walking the catwalk. I disagree with her. She’s so pretty and could be a model. This is what she told me; she wouldn’t be able to keep a straight face. She’d want to smile and laugh the whole way down the catwalk, and that isn’t done in modeling. The designers don’t want you looking at the model. They want you looking at the designs. That makes sense to me.
My mom had to go to urgent care again, the other day. When she got out of bed she could barely walk. Her hip hurt her. She said it felt like something had come loose. She put up with it on the first day, but on the second day, she felt she had to have it x-rayed. The x-ray showed that she has extensive degenerative arthritis in her hip. We know she has that throughout her body, but now her hip is starting to bother her. It hurts her to walk or do any little thing. They gave her a shot and prescribed about 10 days worth of a muscle relaxer. She was already on one kind, but this one seems to work a little better. It doesn’t make her drowsy. I have a feeling there may be a hip replacement sometime in the future. The thing is I like to snuggle with my mom, but I don’t want to snuggle with a robot. She already has 4 screws and two plates in her. She will be getting a knee replacement soon, and now this. She’ll be even more bionic then she is now. She should stay away from that body shop she frequently visits. I think they’re selling her too many parts.
I went this week for more blood and urine tests. My mom and I are like “two peas in a pod” with all these health issues we’re going through. The doctor heard the heart murmur again, so an echo cardiogram was done. Also, within a month’s time, my kidneys have gotten worse. She adjusted my thyroid medicine back to one pill for right now. I will go back in a month for more blood tests. She said I won’t have to have my urine checked next time. Anyway, I found out I have stage 2 kidney disease. I try hard not to think about it, but as you know from my blog a couple of months ago, I am a doctor; Maverick Davis, MD., and I know I won’t get better. My mom and I are trying really hard to ignore the elephant in the room, so to speak, but it’s hard. The good news that had everyone cheering was that I gained half-a-pound.
On to other things. Here are some fun facts from, “The Discerning Cat.”
Cats Can Move Their Ears 180 Degrees
Cats have amazing hearing that’s made possible by some incredible features of their anatomy. They can move their ears 180 degrees. We’ve heard of looking back, but cats can ‘hear back’ too! Cats can also hear higher frequencies than humans. Humans can hear frequencies up to 20kHz, while cats can hear up to 64kHz.
Cats have an array of over 30 different muscles controlling their ears. This gives cats incredible control over their ears and the ability to point each ear independently. One of our favorite cat facts is that cats actually have better hearing than dogs! Plus one for our feline friends!
Cats are incredibly good at hearing different tones and identifying the location of sounds. This leads us to another cat fact. Cats know when we’re talking to them. Our cats might look like they don’t hear us when they’re sitting in the middle of the stairs and we tell them to get out of the way, but they’re only pretending they don’t!
Cats Have Both a Short-Term and Long-Term Memory
Just like their humans, cats have both a long-term and short-term memory and can retain what has happened to them for 16 hours.
Mau is the Egyptian Word for Cat
The breed of Egyptian Mau cat is believed to be the oldest in the world (the Egyptians loved their cats).
The Purpose of Fur Licking is Weather Dependent
Cats lick their fur in the winter in order to smooth it. This then acts as an insulation layer. In the summer licking their fur allows them to cool down.
The First Cat Show Was in 1871
The first cat show was held in London at Crystal Palace in 1871. The Crystal Palace cat show still takes place every year.
There Is a Cat Who Runs a Train Station
At the Kishi train station near Wakayama City in Japan, the station master is a calico cat.
I found some cute cat jokes that I thought you might like:
Why don’t cats shop online? They prefer catalogs.
What do you get if you cross a cat with a snowman? Frostbite.
Why did the cat sit on the computer? To keep an eye on the mouse.
That’s it for this month’s edition of “Cat Tales.” I hope everyone enjoys the rest of this month, and don’t forget Spring must certainly be around the corner.

Take care everyone.

Dear Maverick,
Thanks for sharing another update. Mittens here, been awhile but I’m glad to hear for the most part you are doing okay. How exciting for your friend Spaghetti Betty. Don’t tell my mom because she would put me in a cute design and that’s not just me. As a fellow thyroid cat I must say some days are better than others and with the elephant in the room is hard to ignore don’t let that take away from the in the now moments with your mom. I am sure she loves you like my mom loves me. I just turned 17. She made a big deal about it. Mom’s am I right? My mom has me doing a red light therapy so to speak. It’s a low watt lizard light pretty much and toasts me like a broaster chicken but it sure feels good on my joints. The bulb had to be replaced and the person at the pet store asked what kind of lizard she had and the answer was I don’t it’s go my cat. I thought it was funny when she told me but you are right about it being colder than normal. My mom has the bill to show it but she knows I’m happy so it’s worth it. Keep on gaining that weight and I will say some prayers for you. My sister Lil has a heart murmur and her meds did wonders so I’m hopeful you will be on the right track. Lots of paws Mittens!!
Dear Mittens
I am happy to hear from you. It’s been a while, and I have been thinking of you and Lil. I have to say, I think your mom is ingenious. Wow, a lizard light. I’d love to have been there when she told the person at the pet store that the lizard light bulb was for her cat.
That’s good advice about not worrying so much about our health interfering with all the good moments. God says not to worry about tomorrow, but sometimes it’s a little hard not to.
I wish we could all meet, even our moms. I think we’d get along cattastically.
I just got up, and now I’m going to eat some of my special cat food. Take care of yourself, Mittens. And Lil, and your mom, too.
Love Maverick
