My Mom Is Home

Hello everyone. It’s me again, Maverick, with this month’s edition of “Cat Tales.” Look at that cheesy grin. I am so excited and happy that my mom is home from the hospital.

I have so much to tell you. It goes without saying I was super lonely. My mom’s friend did come over that evening and feed me and give me my meds. A couple of pics were shot and texted to my mom so she could see me while she was in the hospital. The next morning, as my mom’s friend was driving over to feed me, her husband called her and told her that she had forgotten the key. It’s a 25 minute drive one way to our place from hers. So I was late getting my meds and food. But I was glad to see someone. I thought I was forgotten. Another pic was taken of me and texted to my mom. My mom appreciated that so much.

My mom was bound and determined to get out of the hospital as early as possible the next day after her knee replacement. The next thing I know I hear people talking in the living room. I was kept in the bedroom  while my mom was in the hospital. It was my mom and her friends. I was so excited to see her. It was like a party. The only thing was my mom was using a walker, looked super tired, and was having problems getting out of the chair.

While in the hospital and before being released she had a short PT appointment. She was wheeled to the next floor up where there was a brand new rehabilitation center that’s mainly used for car accident victims and stroke patients. My mom said it was really cool because there was a brand new car up there that she got to practice getting in and out of. That’s the kind of stuff that’s hard for her right now. Getting in and out of bed, chairs, and cars. She can’t drive for 6 – 8 weeks. That is going to be tough on my mom. The surgeon didn’t want her doing home therapy because he wanted her where there were machines, and the things she needed to learn to walk with her leg and knee again. She has a cobalt and plastic knee. They used glue instead of stitches or staples, and stuck a big old patch over it. She sees the surgeon in two weeks for her first post-opt appointment. She can’t shower for two weeks because she can’t get her leg wet, but she takes sponge baths. Her friends set her up with a shower chair that pulls up under the sink, a raised toilet-seat, and she already had a rollator with four wheels and a walker with two wheels that was her brother’s. And she has a stand alone walker without wheels that helps her to get out of the chair.

She goes to therapy three times a week. It’s just around the corner from where we live. My mom knows most of those girls there from previous visits, and they are all great.

Just before her surgery she was in the holding room talking to the anesthesiologist when her surgeon walked in. My mom answered his questions he had for her and then my mom told him she had a question for him. She told him I was a writer, and that since my blog was started I had been talking about my mom’s knee. One time a fan, Spooky, wrote in and asked me what happens to my mom’s knee and body parts when they take them out. OMG! What a question. No wonder the cat’s name is Spooky. I told Spooky that I didn’t know, but I would have my mom ask her surgeon. So that morning, when he walked in she asked him. He told her that they are incinerated. Wow! I wasn’t expecting that. I thought maybe they put the parts in one of those red containers you see around the hospital and then a body part pick-up service came along and emptied all the containers. Ooh! I don’t like thinking about someone burning my mom’s old knee. I think the parts should be buried instead and have the hospital chaplain do a service once a month.

While my mom was in the hospital, my mom’s friend noticed that Princess Blue was leaking fluid on the ground. Princess Blue is my mom’s car, but don’t ever call her a car. She thinks she’s human, and I believe she is. She’s taught my mom so many words that my mom never heard of before, especially when people drive on her tail. She doesn’t like that. People drive like maniacs where we are currently living. Anyway, my mom’s friend fixed the oil leak, washed her, filled the gas tank, and fixed a couple of rust spots and painted them. My mom has some great Christian friends. They have helped us a lot during my mom’s hospitalizations.

About twenty minutes after my mom got home, my Aunty showed up. She’s stayed with us for a week to help out my mom and me. Then her sister, my mom’s other cousin, came for the second week. I know they are my cousins too, but they are old like my mom so I call them Aunty. I knew my one Aunty, but I had only met the other one once, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Let’s say I figured it out quickly when she showed up at our apartment holding a mug that said, “I laughed so hard tears ran down my leg.” A big cheesy grin came over my face, “party time” I thought to myself. We had lots of fun and laughs. Laughter is good for us, and I am sure it helped my mom to heal. It was so nice of them to help my mom out for those two weeks. We really appreciated it. Helping others helps make the world a better place.

My mom had her PT evaluation and did some exercises. She didn’t do too bad, but she couldn’t lift her leg at all. But she’s made progress since then. Sounds like a dog problem to me.

Before I finish this month’s blog I have a few cat jokes for you.

Cat Jokes

What’s a cat’s favorite color? – Purrple
Why are cats afraid of trees? – Because of their bark.
What do you call a cat who loves bowling? – An Alley cat.
What do Christmas and desert cats have in common? – Sandy claws
Why can’t you play poker in the jungle? – Too many cheetahs.

That’s it for this edition of “Cat Tales.” My mom said to tell everyone thank you for the prayers, cards, and thoughtful gifts during my mom’s recovery from her knee replacement. I’ll have another update next time. Until then, have a great rest of the month and a safe holiday.

Quote of the day: “Cats seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to ask for what you want.” – Joseph Wood Krutch

I have found the above quote true. It’s what I did when I asked the owner of EUP News if I could have a job. It never hurts to ask for what you want.
