State Police Investigating Two Snowmobile Crashes – Alcohol and Speed Suspected

Portage Township, MICH. Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie Posts investigated two snowmobile personal injury crashes that occurred almost simultaneously on Big Manistique Lake. The crashes happened at approximately 12:35 a.m. yesterday. Both snowmobiles were traveling north bound across Big Manistique Lake, when they ran into Burnt Island. When they ran up onto the island both subjects were ejected from their machines.

Both subjects were injured when they were ejected and were taken to Helen Joy Hospital in Newberry for treatment. The two subjects were identified as a sixty-one-year-old male from Leland and the other as a fifty-nine-year-old male from McMillan. The crashes are still under investigation and alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor.

Troopers were assisted by Portage Township, Fire, Rescue and EMS services.
