Obituary For Thomas Jay Cooper
Thomas Jay Cooper, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on August 16, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. Born on December 12, 1954, in Wyandotte, Michigan to Raymond and Shirley (Pembroke) Cooper, Tom lived out his life in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Tom was a man who lived his life with purpose and dedication. After graduating from Sault Area High, he embarked on a journey with the United States Navy, serving as a gunner’s mate and seeing the world through his service. His commitment to his country and community continued as he devoted over thirty years to the Department of Corrections, retiring honorably as a Lieutenant.
Whether he was running group homes or running alongside huskies, Tom embraced life. He was a big brother on Mondays, a friend at lunch on Wednesdays, the jokester comrade on Thursdays, a master card player on Friday nights, a loving Papa on Saturdays, and a fantasy football champ on Sundays.
Tom’s quick wit and warm smile were his trademarks, always ready with a joke to bring laughter to those around him. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued, listening with intent and speaking with wisdom.
Family was the cornerstone of Tom’s life. He is survived by his loving son, Steve Cooper; his devoted daughters, Jonelle Cooper and Kate (Josh LaMere) Cooper; and his sister, Patricia Lawless. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren, Kyle, Haven, Aiden, Jax, and Nola Cooper; and his precious great-granddaughter, Layla Cooper. Tom’s enduring friendship with Richard and Josie Benoit, spanning nearly sixty years, was a testament to his loyalty and kindness.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Shirley (Pembroke) Cooper; his siblings, Mike, Kim, and Kelly; aunt, Nola Cooper; and his lifelong friend and brother in spirit, Buck Gravelle. Their memories remain cherished in the hearts of those who knew them.
A Celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at The Alpha, 105 W. Portage Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Tom’s memory to a charity of your choice.
Tom Cooper’s life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all those whose lives he touched.
