Obituary For Steven John Tamlyn
Steven John "Bernie" Tamlyn, age 62, of Cheboygan, Michigan, passed away suddenly on October 22, 2026, the result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born on March 10, 1964, in St. Ignace, Michigan, to Norman "Chickie" and Margaret (Fenlon) Tamlyn.
The last of six children, Steve spent much of his youth enjoying all the things St. Ignace had to offer. After graduating from LaSalle High School, he attended the Florida Institute of Technology and became a certified commercial diver. “Scuba Steve” traveled much of the United States working as a diver, underwater welder, deckhand, and eventually obtained his Captain’s license. Steve worked for Ryba Marine Construction out of Cheboygan, Michigan, most of his career.
Steve’s fondest memories were of his son Seth and of his many travels across the United States with his sweetybum by his side. Partners in adventure, Steve and Jo spent a lot of time exploring different areas as they traveled around the country. Some of Steve’s favorites included hiking the hills of Sedona, Arizona, and finding the best breakfast diner or buffet in a new town. Steve shared his wife’s love of animals having numerous pets as they also volunteered their time towards animal rescue efforts. A die-hard college football fan, he cheered on Michigan every chance he got (Go Blue!).
Steve leaves behind his wife and life partner, JoAnne Gareau; siblings, Norman (Mary), Sandy (Brian), Donnie (Kathy), Susan, and Jake; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Chickie and Margaret; his beloved son, Seth Joseph Tamlyn; and his niece, Jennifer Brown.
In honor of Steve and Seth – Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2026, beginning at 2:00 PM in the banquet room at Audie’s Restaurant, 314 N. Nicolet Street, Mackinaw City, Michigan 49701.
