Obituary For Sharon Kay Wheat

Sharon Kay Wheat (Squires), 87, of Curtis, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026, at UP Health Systems-Marquette.

Born August 19, 1938, in Grand Rapids, Sharon was the daughter of the late Forrest and Althea (Kellogg) Squires. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1956 and went on to attend the Butterworth School of Nursing, earning her Registered Nurse degree in 1959. Sharon dedicated her career to caring for others, working as an RN in various hospitals and doctors’ offices throughout northern Kent County until her retirement.

Sharon cherished the time she spent with her husband, Keith. Throughout their 66 years of marriage, they shared countless adventures snowmobiling across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, camping, and fishing-especially for walleyes. Their love of the outdoors eventually led them to retire in Curtis on South Manistique Lake.

Sharon was known for her thoughtful nature. Not a holiday, birthday, or special occasion passed without a card from her, always containing a handwritten note. She enjoyed the fellowship of her lake community, tending to her flowers, and keeping the seasonal hummingbirds well fed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Nancy Runyon; her brother, James “Jim” Squires; and her granddaughter, Rebecca Wheat.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Keith Wheat; her son, Brad (Connie) Wheat; her sister-in-law, June Squires; grandchildren Michael (Jessica) Wheat and Kaylynn (Tim) Cook; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
